Paraguayan infantryman, 1869, typical of the appearance of the few veteran soldiers still fighting in the last two years of the war. Colors: low black cap with national-colored cockade (blue, white, red center) and bottom band (from top down: red, white, blue); short red jacket; white rolled-up trousers; white leather belts.

Paraguayan militia infantryman, 1868, wearing the most common campaign dress of the militia units. Colors: black shako with bottom band in national colors, and vertical stripes of the same (from left to right: blue, white, red); red blouse; blue chiripá kilt with red and narrower black stripes; black leather waist belt, ammunition pouch, and bayonet scabbard. In both cases the weapon is probably an 1842 “Tower” smoothbore musket. (Drawings by Benedetto Esposito)
